Richard is a consultant in our Dispute Resolution Department, having previously been a Partner for 30 years and Head of the Department.  He conducts a broad range of contentious and advisory work, including disputes as to contract, inheritance, intellectual property and education. He also has extensive experience in relation to judicial review proceedings.

Richard has appeared in most courts in the United Kingdom, including the Supreme Court and has been involved in many reported cases and countless mediations.

Richard is a former World and five times British National Dinghy champion. As an adjunct to his litigation work, Richard has a unique practice that flows from his sailing background. He acts for many of the top British Olympic sailors, including multi-medallists.

Richard also acts for several well- known marine businesses, including yacht brokers, designers, builders as well as yacht owners and charterers.

Richard is a Trustee of The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, a charity that supports young persons suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses. He was formerly a founding Trustee and Chair of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, a charity formed in memory the double Olympic medallist, Andrew Simpson.  The purpose of that charity is educational through the sport of sailing. 

He is a member of the London Litigation Solicitor's Association.

Richard is recommended in The Legal 500 UK for his commercial litigation work and the directory quotes that "he provides excellent advice". It also writes that "the 'personable and charismatic' Richard Butcher has 'unique knowledge of the sailing industry'".
