Ben Saxton and Nicola Groves: Sailing Blog

We're Ben Saxton and Nicola Groves and we're "Going for Gold" at the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. We campaign the Nacra 17 in the British Sailing Team. Our partnership started in late September 2014. In November 2014, at our first major event sailing together, we took part in the Sailing World Cup Finals in Abu Dhabi and finished 7th overall, competing against the top 20 boats in the world - we definitely have the potential to be the best in the World! Here's a bit more information about us both:

Ben Saxton (age 24)

Ben comes from north Hertfordshire and graduated from Southampton University in 2011 with a BSc in Business Studies. He has been competing and winning at international level since 2002 in Optimist, 29er, 420 and team racing events.

Recent successes in Olympic class sailing include:

• 2013 Nacra 17 World Championship - Silver Medal
• 2012 470 European Championship - Silver Medal
• Current World ranking - Nacra 17 - 6th - (best ranking 1st)

Nicola Groves (age 25)

Nicola comes from London and graduated from Exeter University in 2010 with a BSc in Human Biosciences, and worked as a Senior Account Executive in an advertising agency before making the transition into full time sailing in 2012.

With the introduction of the 49erFX to the Olympic programme, Nic was invited to join the British Sailing Team, being one of the few experienced female skiff crews in the UK at that time, and in 2013 she went on to win a gold medal at Sail for Gold in Weymouth.

Recent successes in Olympic class sailing include:

• 2013 49erFX European Championship - Bronze Medal
• 2013 49erFX World Championships - 8th
• Current World ranking 7th (best ranking 3rd)

A Recent Update From Us:

It's good to back in the UK after competing in Abu Dhabi and training in Miami last month with only one day off in total. We are back for a few days to meet up with friends and family over Christmas and the New Year. Although we're lucky to be travelling to great sailing venues around the world, sometimes it's just nice to stop and spend some time at home, even if it is a bit cold, dark, wet and windy!

In January Nicola and I have a month training and racing in Miami. In the spring we are based in Europe and have training and then four major events at Palma, Hyeres, Medemblik and Weymouth followed by the all-important World Championships in Denmark in July. After that we travel to Rio in the autumn.
